The dome was build against a lot of opposition. It
was to serve a lot of venues and not just NFL football as a lot of people thought. The dome has hosted NCAA events, dragsters, auto
shows, high school finals, marching high school bands and many, many other events. The point is the RCA dome holds a lot on memories
for a whole lot of people.
Mayor Hudnut was the Mayor of Indianapolis at the time of the domes beginning and
a large promoter of the dome’s construction. Many believed that it was one of the biggest mistakes Indianapolis will ever make…at
that time. But it proved to be a magnet for other revenue for Indianapolis.
Hotels, restaurants, bars
and nightclubs and the magnificent Circle Centre Mall…just to name a few of the explosion businesses that came “after” the dome was
built.
Our big point is this Greenwoodians! The proposed Greenwood Aquatic Center for Greenwood would
prove to do the same thing. Maybe on a slightly smaller scale, but nonetheless it would bring a gigantic explosion of revenue for
Greenwood, in various forms, other than direct revenue, and mostly in a large variety of businesses attracted to the area!
Those who oppose the Aquatic have just reasons, we are not down playing that. Even with tax caps … revenues from user fees and local
income tax will no doubt increase, regardless if the Aquatic Center gets built or not. So why not at the very least let Greenwood
benefit from that?
Also if Greenwood wants to be competitive with other communities to bring bigger and better businesses
to Greenwood, then something has to give. Ironically it will come for your tax dollars. Sorry but that is a reality check for many
of you! But…
Your children and other future Greenwoodians will benefit to endless bounds. Good jobs mean a lot more
grown-up children will remain in the community. That is one of the biggest perks of the Aquatic Center … once it gets built!
The Aquatic Center will be one of the greatest sources of revenue for the Southern district of Indianapolis and Greenwood, ever conceived.
Think back to last year when Cabela’s announced its plans to build here. Ka-Boom! Building started at an unbelievable rate, and not
just near that area, but also around the entire community. The same thing will happen when (not if) the Aquatic Center is built.
The RCA dome has been an encouragement of prosperity for Indianapolis and the Aquatic Center will do the same for Greenwood.
