Several spectators said they would not return next year if this were the best the Greenwood can do. They brought their children out to see Santa and to mingle with the children like he does every year.
Santa arrived late, actually spectators were getting a little annoyed that the schedule was so poorly adhered to. When Santa arrived he rushed upon the Platform asked to start the countdown from. Then when the lights lit up, he rushed off to the library. That was a disappointment to many.
With the normal affair of carolers the evening was a pleasant one for those who chose to enjoy rather than complain.
Innovative investments ran by Tony Boxdorfer, owner of the big white house, was present to hand out free hot chocolate and cookies. There was no shortage of people in the long lines to get the free savory beverage on this crispy cool evening. Somehow Hot Chocolate and a Christmas gathering just fits together.
The Dare car did not bring Santa in as usual, the reason was unclear. Children enjoyed the old town retro dressed carolers singing. Many joined in on the caroling.
When the tree lit up everyone cheered and smiles were just about everywhere. Many local leaders were present and were dare not start naming them for fear of leaving a name out. A couple of city council persons, the fire chief, and our MC Councilman Brent Corey were present.
A really odd thing is that this is a city event that shares love and kindness. Where is the Mayor Henderson every year lately? The Mayor has a very busy schedule, but perhaps he can make the time for a few minutes to share with the community that pays his salary next year, at least for a few minutes?
After the lighting Santa and Mrs. Clause headed for the Library for pictures. You could get your child’s picture (or yours) with Santa and Mrs. Clause for $1.00 or you could take your own if you had a camera. The line was endless and several hundred waited for hours.
Carriage rides were quickly sold out for the evening and there were no shortage for passengers either. For a mere $2.00 per person you got a wonder carriage ride, that’s a bargain anywhere.
The Old Town of Greenwood Association is to be commended for all the hard work again this year.
